Classic Ceramic Tile in the New Age

The word ceramic literally refers to clay in all its forms but it is mostly in reference to all inorganic non-metallic materials.

When most people think of ceramic tile, images of retro, glassy looking squares in grandma’s kitchen come to mind. However, ceramic tile has come a long way in style and design over the last 20 years. In fact, many popular styles of ceramic tile mimic those of natural stone. We supply and install the latest brand-name ceramic tile to create a perfect environment in any room of your house.

When you're in search of a flooring material that combines strength and durability with timeless good looks, it's hard to beat all the virtues of ceramic tile. Ceramic tile is one of the oldest and longest-lasting flooring materials known -- intricate ceramic mosaics on the floors of homes in Pompeii survived the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD -- and one look in a tile showroom will give you enough colors, patterns, sizes and ideas to delight any decorator.

Ceramic tile is an appropriate choice for any floor in your home, but it's especially well suited for such areas as entryways, bathrooms, kitchens, hallways, Basements and other areas where high traffic and exposure to water and dirt might make other materials less practical.

There are four basic decisions to make when choosing ceramic tile for your floor -- size, shape, color, and finish.

Size: Ceramic tile ranges in size from mosaics, which are approximately 1/4" square, to 12" x 12" squares and even larger. For floors, your best choice is typically in the 6" x 6" up to 12" x 12" sizes -- the larger tiles look better on larger floor areas. Mosaic tiles are also a traditional choice for bathroom floors -- the greater number of grout lines help make the tile less slippery underfoot -- but are usually impractical in entries and other areas where constant exposure to dirt make all the grout lines difficult to keep clean.

Ceramic Tile Floor Care and Maintenance

When it comes to floor cleaning, ceramic tile is one of the easiest surfaces to maintain. All you need are basic cleaning tools, a little common household cleaner, and water. The only way it could be easier would be if someone else did the cleaning for you!

Many manufacturers recommend using an all-purpose cleaner, like Mr. Clean, Spic ‘n Span, or Lysol, for example. Be advised, though, that cleaners containing acids or ammonia and should not be used on some surfaces. Another consideration when choosing a tile cleaning product is that the cleaner should also be compatible with grout. Of course, it is always best to check your flooring manufacturer’s recommendations.

Now of course this is your daily/weekly maintenance. You will find that eventually it will get to the point where your tile needs to be professionally cleaned...sure signs are when your grout ends up a different color... than what you installed! And I can assure you that this will happen at one point in time! Grout is like a magnet to dirt and food spills! This will occur unless you properly 'seal' your Tile floors following your professional cleaning!

This is the time you need to call Carpet Dry-Tech. We will come out and ascertain exactly what steps need to be done to get your tile looking new again... and your grout back to the original color! Our cleaning process (3 step process) is all most folks need.

1) Commercial grade buffer cleaning 2) Buff Tiles 3) Clear Coat finish

Optionally, we can also go through a stripping process (due to wax build-up) if needed, as well as properly 'seal' your tiles and grout.

For light cleaning of ceramic tile, follow these typical steps:

* Remove loose dirt with a vacuum cleaner or a broom
* Mix a small amount of cleaner with warm water
(Note: follow the cleaner manufacturer’s instructions for the proper ratio of cleaner to water.)
* Using a cotton mop, sponge, or other soft apparatus, clean the floor, then thoroughly rinse with clean water, and allow to dry
(Note: rinsing is very important, since dried detergent not only dulls the finish, but can trap abrasive dirt particles. Also, if your tile has a polished finish, you should dry it with a soft towel to prevent water spots.)

To reduce the likelihood of stains and heavy soil buildup, follow these simple steps:
* Clean up spills immediately
* Place dirt-catching mats at every room entrance
* Routinely sweep and mop
