Area rugs are often subject to a buildup of compacted dirt and debris, stains, spots, and odors because they are most likely to be placed in high-traffic areas. As a result, the area rug that was once a beautiful accessory is pungent, dingy, and unsightly. Vacuuming and even if you have a steam cleaner in your closet doesn’t revive the area rug, we at Carpet-Dry Tech would like to relate a deep cleaning method that might be effective at renewing your area rug.
Area Rug Cleaning Equipment & Supplies
– 2TBS Laundry detergent
– 2 TBS Washing soda (stronger than baking soda)
– 1tsp Mild dishwashing liquid
– 1-gallon container that can evenly distribute the solution over the rug.
– Scrub Brush
– Garden Hose with High Pressure Nozzle Attachment
– Clean hard-surface area outside area that can get soaked. (A patio for example, just makes sure it is efficiently cleaned first.)
– Extraction Equipment or Squeegee (Wet/Dry Vac for example to remove excess water.)
Deep Cleaning Steps for Area Rug
1) The rug needs to be placed upside in the designated area outside. Spray every inch of the backside of the rug using the garden hose equipped with the pressurized nozzle and use extremely slow and methodical passes. Focus more time on problem areas because with this technique, at semi-close range, and slow application, much of grit and grime and compacted soil are loosened.
2) Never use hot-hot water, but in your gallon sized container, fill it with warm-hot water and mix the washing soda, laundry detergent, and mild dishwashing liquid. In the event your container is smaller, don’t forget to scale down the ingredients. Once thoroughly mixed, evenly distribute the formula evenly onto the rug’s backside and let it sit for 15-60 minutes.
3) Using the same slow methodically and efficient technique rinse the area rug with your hose and attached nozzle.
4) You will need to flip the rug over. Depending on the size, you may need help as it is soaked and likely to be especially heavy. Do not panic if it looks worse on the top, it is normal with the loose filth at the surface.
5) Just as you did on the backside, rinse the topside of the area rug and apply the solution to the top evenly; let it sit for 15-60 minutes. In the same manner, slowly rinse the away the solution and debris slowly and methodically with your hose and attached nozzle.
6) For extremely grungy rugs, you may need to repeat the steps, or in problem areas, use scrub brush and muscle. Don’t forget to rinse if you add any more solution.
7) Dry. Using extraction equipment is optimal to remove excess water, if you do not have anything available, use a squeegee to do what you can. In the sunniest place, hang your area rug to dry. Depending on the climate and how much water you were able to remove dictates how long it will dry; it could take a couple of days. Only replace the area rug inside once it is fully dry.
