Just like a car needs to be maintained so does new furniture. Preforming simple maintenance on your furniture will keep it looking good and will make it last longer, making maintenance important. Your new furniture is the right shape and size and the perfect color. Without maintenance, it may only take a year for it to look bad. The cushions will look lumpy and the fabrics may have some stains on it, making it can look a lot older than it is! How did this happen? You didn’t give it any TLC, that’s what happened. Carpet Dry Tech offers some helpful tips below.
How Do I Maintain My Fabric Upholstery to Make it Look New Again?
Fluff Upholstery Fabric. The cushions on your furniture aren’t made of concrete that will keep its shape no matter what you do. They are made of materials that are soft and will need to be fluffed from time to time to keep them looking and feeling great. You can refresh the shape of your cushions by prodding, punching, pushing and poking them into the right shape. You do it with the pillows on your bed so why wouldn’t you do it with the cushions on your sofa? Another great thing about fluffing those cushions is you can take out any aggression you may have on them. You’ll get your cushions looking great and your frustrations out all at the same time! Try and do it weekly, if not more. It really doesn’t take a lot of time.
Flip Cushions. The cushions on your furniture should be flipped every couple of weeks to make sure they wear evenly and stay in shape. Make sure the seat cushions and the back cushions are flipped on a regular basis. This will be difficult if the back cushions are attached to the sofa, but you can still something. These cushions almost always have a zippered opening on the bottom of them-simply take the out, flip it and then put it back in. Back cushions that aren’t attached will last longer because they are easier to flip. If your sofa has three cushions, then chances are that the middle one gets the least amount of wear because people generally don’t sit in the middle if they have a choice. Rotate them regularly. If the two end cushions aren’t the same as the center one them all you can do is flip the second one over.
Vacuum Couches & Sofas Often. This means taking the time to vacuum your furniture regularly. Dust collects much faster than you think, just look at your book shelves. The same dust is settling on your furniture. If you ignore this dust you are cutting the lifespan of your upholstery down. When we sit on furniture that is dusty it wears down the fabric like sandpaper does to wood. You’ll be replacing our sofa sooner than you’d like. Get into the habit of vacuuming your upholstery every time you dust your home to get rid of dust.
